From Battlefield to Boardroom: The Unique Strengths of Veteran Entrepreneurs

The transition from military service to civilian life can be challenging. But for many veterans, entrepreneurship offers a unique path to success, leveraging the skills and experiences gained in the armed forces. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army, 2/11 ACR, I faced many challenges as I entered the civilian workforce. Still, thanks to my training in the military, I was able to overcome and learn from each experience.
I have been in business for 7 years and am thriving and growing yearly. Facing a government shutdown and the COVID-19 crisis, which also made us close our doors, but we persevered. I am also the co-founder of the NJ State Veterans Chamber of Commerce, which has become one of the largest non-profit businesses for veterans in the state of NJ. https://njveteranschamber.com/

What Makes Veteran Entrepreneurs Unique?
  • Leadership and Discipline: Military service instills strong leadership qualities, discipline, and the ability to make quick, decisive decisions under pressure. These traits are invaluable in the fast-paced and often unpredictable world of entrepreneurship.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration: Veterans are accustomed to working in high-pressure, team-oriented environments where collaboration and communication are paramount. This fosters a strong sense of teamwork and the ability to build and lead effective teams.
  • Resilience and Adaptability: Military life demands resilience, adaptability, and overcoming challenges. These traits are essential for navigating the inevitable obstacles and setbacks in any entrepreneurial venture.
  • Resourcefulness and Problem-Solving: Veterans are trained to find creative solutions to complex problems with limited resources. This resourcefulness is a significant asset in the entrepreneurial landscape, where innovation and problem-solving are key to success.
  • Strong Work Ethic: The military instills a strong work ethic, dedication to duty, and a commitment to excellence. These values translate seamlessly into the entrepreneurial mindset, driving perseverance and a relentless pursuit of goals.
Challenges and Opportunities:
While veterans possess unique strengths, they also face specific challenges:
  • Transitioning Skills: Translating military skills and experiences into the business world can be challenging.
  • Access to Capital: Securing funding for a startup can be difficult for any entrepreneur, but veterans may face additional hurdles.
  • Networking and Mentorship: Building a strong network and finding mentors with relevant business experience can be crucial for veteran entrepreneurs.

Resources and Support:
Fortunately, numerous resources are available to support veteran entrepreneurs:
  • Veteran-focused organizations: Organizations like the NJ State Veterans Chamber of Commerce, Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC), and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) offer resources, mentorship, and funding opportunities.
  • Veteran-owned businesses: Connecting with other veteran entrepreneurs can provide valuable peer support, networking opportunities, and insights.
  • Government programs: The government offers various programs and incentives to support veteran-owned businesses.
Final Thoughts:
Entrepreneurship can be rewarding for veterans looking to leverage their unique skills and experiences. By embracing the challenges, leveraging available resources, and cultivating a strong support network, veteran entrepreneurs can succeed in business.
